Summer Camp Information

Dear Scouts and parents,

If you were not able to attend the Troop 197 meeting Sunday, or missed picking up a paper copy of Camp Information for one or both of our Summer Camps, you can pick one up at the next meeting. Or, if you want to go ahead and register now ... you will want to visit either of the summer camp's websites, and go through a lot of information. So, check your calendar now and then choose one (or both) camps soon because the most popular classes fill up first !

For each Summer Camp week, we always have an older Scout, of First Class rank or higher, step up and offer to serve at each camp as that
week's Senior Patrol Leader. Plus, he will need an Assistant Senior Patrol Leader for that week. Both positions count as Leadership Positions, if done well. In addition to leading the Troop for all seven days, both jobs include planning and preparations for the camp, picking Patrol Leaders, and being sure that all attending Scouts are also prepared for camp and have had all of their & their parents questions answered. So, any Scouts (of First Class rank or higher) that are attending either summer camp and want to offer to serve as our SPL or as our ASPL for the troop during that week, please contact me soon at voluparts@mindspring.com

We are required to have at least 2 Adults helping our 197 Scouts, every day of summer camp week (that means 24/7). Due to the large group
at Camp Rainey, we should have at least 3 deep Adult coverage. I prefer to see 4 or more Adults at Rainey and 3 or more at Woodruff all
the time. This means that all parents of our summer camp Scouts need to take a hard look at their calendars and then contact me to step up
and commit to attend (whether for the whole week or for a few days). The camp has a schedule to follow, so it's not rocket science. This troop is run by Scouts learning leadership skills and by adult volunteers that see their sons growing up before their eyes. Our job is to be there when they need us -- plus it's FUN ! If you have any Questions about what we do at camp, how much fun it can be, and to SIGN-UP as an Adult Camper, please let me know.

We have prepared information packets for both camps. These are available at upcoming meetings. They include listings of all Merit Badge choices, schedules, medical forms, afternoon activity choices, and or other relevant information.
Please read them carefully.

Please follow Age Recommendations when selecting merit badges. First year scouts are required to sign up for the Swimming and First Aid
merit badge, and then they can choose other badges from their '11 year old' list. A Scout can also choose to Stay at Camp and rest
during one of the offered merit badge sessions, if he doesn't want to sign up for as many merit badges as the # of sessions that are offered, but most do. For summer camp, we discourage Camp ''TNT'' program participation, as we want our Squeebs to work with our troop guides this spring and next year on their advancement. TNT is a program intended for new troops with no older scouts to learn the skills from.

Please pick your badge choices (up to 6 for either camp) Its important to note that some badges have age requirements, merit badge pre-requisites, and/or additional costs. Put together a schedule with a few Alternate Merit Badges listed just in case your first choices are not all available. Note that first-year scouts are required to sign up for the Swimming and First Aid merit badges, and then they can choose other badges from their 11-year-old list. For all other Scouts, please see guidelines regarding merit badge selection in the course doc. It's important to note that some badges have age requirements, merit badge pre-requisites, and/or additional costs. Camp Rainey Mountain is offering a few new Merit Badge choices this year including Energy, Nuclear Science, Chemistry, Engineering, and Electronics!

In addition, if you want to have the same schedule as another Scout, please indicate this in your email or sent in with your forms. (Get with the another Scout / parent to set up the same schedule.) Carefully select your merit badge choices (and for Camp Rainey, not just the merit badge courses but his preferred times as well).

Please sign a Northeast Georgia Council, Parental Consent Form for all Rainey Scouts & if 13 years or older AND signing up for 'Trek', 'Cope', or 'Gold Rush' , then also sign a Release for that program.

For Woodruff Scouts, no general release is needed, but one is needed for Woodruff afternoon programs for all scouts like : 'Whitewater Express', 'Ocoee', 'Nantahala', or 'Horseback' . A release is also needed for Woodruff IF 13 years or older AND signing up for : 'Ultimate Zone' or 'Woodruff EXTREME' program.

For both Camps, we have NEW Health Forms to deal with this year. First read the ''Medical Information'' introduction page and then have your Doctor do the yearly physical exam and complete All of the 2 pages (Parts A, B) Annual Health and Medical Record medical forms for all Scouts and for all Adults that stay overnight at the camp. The 3rd page (Part C) is a '' Consent and Release '' form & is for all Scouts and Adult campers (to be filled in by a Parent / Adult).

To sign up, copy and email this section to Kay or Denise and then later mail this section with your check to Troop 197, your signed releases (if applicable) and a copy of your completed health forms. (Please also keep a copy of these health forms for your records.
